Introduction
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery serve as a referral and centre of expertise in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
In July 1970, Dr. S. Kandiah performed the first plastic surgery case under the management of the Department of Orthopaedics. The Plastic Surgery Clinic commenced operations on 13 July 1970. Since its establishment, the department has undergone various changes and developments, achieving significant progress in the provision of plastic and reconstructive surgery services under the leadership of Datuk Dr. Ahmad Ridzwan Arshad.
From 2006 until June 2023, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was led by Madam (Dr.) Normala Haji Basiron. The department is currently under the leadership of Mr. (Dr.) Mohammad Ali bin Mat Zain.
At present, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery not only manage cases at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, but also provides services at Hospital Tunku Azizah, particularly for patients requiring plastic surgery services and burn treatment among paediatric patients.
The Burn Unit at Hospital Kuala Lumpur has been managed by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery since 2 July 2018. Meanwhile, the Paediatric Burn Unit at Hospital Tunku Azizah commenced operations under the management of the department on 1 January 2024.
In line with the development of healthcare services and the needs of patients, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery remain committed to providing high-quality and comprehensive care in the fields of plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as burn care and management.

To be a leading Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery service in the Ministry of Health Malaysia, delivering safe, high quality, and patient centered care with excellence in functional and aesthetic outcomes.
Mission
- To provide comprehensive, safe, and evidence based plastic and reconstructive surgery service in line with Ministry of Health Malaysia policies and standards.Â
- To ensure accessible, timely, and patient centered care with emphasis on functional restoration and quality of life.Â
- To uphold clinical governance, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement in accordance with MOH standard.Â
- To strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration in the management of complex reconstruction, burns, and wound care cases.
- To provide and support education, training and competency development of healthcare personnel.
- To promote research, innovation, and service development within the MOH framework.
Goals
- Improve the quality of plastic surgery services in the hospital.
- Enhance patient safety in the burn unit.
Objective
- Maintain high success rates in complex and microsurgical reconstructions.
- Maintain burn wound infection rate through continuous surveillance and infection prevention control compliance.
