General Surgery

Introduction

Department of Surgery is one of the biggest department in HKL. The department provides general surgery and surgical subspecialty services. It serves as the main referral centre for Breast and Endocrine Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. It also provides wound care and stoma care services as well as a one-stop support centre for breast cancer patients. The department caters for General Surgery cases within Klang Valley and subspecialty referrals from within and outside Klang Valley.

Vision

The HKL General Surgery Department will be a centre of excellence for providing general surgery and surgical subspecialty services as well as education, training and research.

Mission

  1. To expand and provide a high level of surgical specialty and subspecialty services at par with regional and international standards.
  2. To provide training for general and subspecialty surgical services all levels of healthcare providers including subspecialty surgical trainees, masters surgery candidates, medical officers, house officers and paramedics.
  3. To create networking in service and training with other centers of excellence at national, regional and international levels.
  4. To provide safe, efficient and excellent healthcare service to the public according to defined standards.

Objective

The general objective of the department is to provide a comprehensive, efficient, up-to-date and safe general and subspecialty surgical healthcare.

  1. To provide a high quality of surgical care in general, breast and endocrine, colorectal, thoracic, vascular and endovascular surgery.
  2. To train various levels of healthcare providers in general and subspecialty surgical services to provide safe, competent and efficient care to patients.
  3. To disseminate the surgical knowledge through continuous professional development (CPD) programs such as seminars, courses and conferences.
  4. To enhance the surgical skills and competence amongst surgeons and trainees through courses and workshops.

Services

CLINICAL SERVICES

 

Clinical services are provided as out-patient, in-patient or daycare.

  • Out-patient services are for review of referral cases, follow-up cases, wound care and stoma-care.
  • Daycare services include minor and simple major surgeries, endoscopy procedures, wound and stoma care and non-invasive vascular laboratory.
  • In-patients service is provided for Surgical specialty and subspecialty care for both elective and emergency surgical conditions.
  • Surgeries are done either conventional or minimally invasive methods.

Vascular and Endovascular

The Vascular Unit manages diseases of the arteries and veins

  • Open and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR/TEVAR)
  • Bypass surgeries, peripheral angioplasty or hybrid for peripheral vascular diseases
  • Open surgery and endovenous procedures for varicose veins
  • Carotid artery diseases
  • Creation and maintenance of vascular access for haemodialysis
  • Vascular trauma
  • Diagnostic evaluation with non-invasive vascular laboratory facilities.

Breast and Endocrine

The Breast and Endocrine Surgery Unit provides comprehensive care for both benign and malignant breast and endocrine conditions.

  • Advanced reconstructive breast surgery
  • Conventional open and minimally invasive procedures for thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal disorders.
  • Advanced scarless endoscopic thyroidectomy, a safe and effective technique to treat benign thyroid conditions without leaving a visible neck scar.
  • Postoperative care is delivered by our specially trained breast care nurses, ensuring optimal recovery and holistic patient support.
  • Treatment of complex recurrent or advanced Breast & Endocrine diseases requiring combined multidisciplinary care.
  • Active interactions with NGO groups such as BCWA, AMANITA, and MAKNA.

Colorectal

  • Providing surgical care for both malignant and benign colorectal conditions since 2015.
  • The unit is tertiary referral centre for managing complex colorectal cancer cases, including advanced pelvic malignancies requiring pelvic exenteration.
  • Our services encompass both open and minimal invasive approach with plans for robotic surgery in the future.
  • Also involved in complex and huge retroperitoneal tumour cases, usually requiring multi-discipline involvement with other units or department.

Thoracic

  • Tertiary referral centre provides services encompassing both General Thoracic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery.
  • The scope of services includes Lung, Mediastinum, Chest Wall, Esophagus and Airway surgery.
  • Our significant speciality is the utilisation of the Uniportal VATS and the
  • Non-intubated approach for the majority of our cases.

Wound Care

  • The wound care unit serves as a referral unit primarily for patients under the care of Department of General Surgery.
  • Provides wound care for both in-patient and out-patient
  • Provides wound care services for patients from other departments when needed.

Endoscopy

  • Endoscopy services are provided for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
  • Services are provided for both outpatient as elective and in-patient for emergency cases.
  • Elective endoscopes are mainly for surveillance and screening for malignant diseases.
  • Emergency services are provided round the clock for gastrointestinal bleeding conditions.

Stoma Care

  • Referral unit for stoma services for all wards in the General Surgery Department.
  • Accepts referrals from other departments for complicated and complex stoma conditions.

TRAINING SERVICES

Datuk Zainal Ariffin Azizi, HKL Simulation and Skills Training Centre

  • The simulation and skills training centre is under the care of Department of Surgery HKL.
  • It provides up-to-date simulation stations for hands on training in basic and advanced medical and surgical skills for various levels and discipline of health care providers.
  • It caters for training for healthcare providers from HKL as well as outside HKL, including universities.

Animal Laboratory,  Institute of Medical Research

  • The IMR animal lab is under the joint care of IMR and Department of Surgery, HKL.
  • It provides the avenue for hands-on training on body parts as well as live animal models.
