Introduction
In 1975, Dr Abu Bakar bin Dato Suleiman (now Tan Sri Dato Dr Abu Bakar), a nephrologist, assumed leadership of the dialysis unit at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and reorganized its operations. The following year, in 1976, the Nephrology Unit was upgraded to a full-fledged department, marking the beginning of a structured and integrated approach to renal replacement therapy in Malaysia.
In 1975, Malaysia saw its first living-related renal transplantation performed by Dr Hussein Awang. A year later, the country’s first deceased donor renal transplantation was successfully carried out, further advancing the field of Nephrology in Malaysia.
The Department of Nephrology at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, with its rich history of remarkable achievements, has reached numerous milestones and will continue to excel as a leader in Nephrology in Malaysia.
Vision
The Department of Nephrology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, will continue to be a leading centre for Nephrology, Dialysis, and Kidney Transplantation services in Malaysia, providing excellent, advanced, and high-quality services.
It will also continue to serve as a national referral centre, as well as a centre for education and research in this subspecialty throughout the country. In addition, this department will be involved in coordination and advice to the Ministry of Health Malaysia in the development and advancement of Nephrology, Dialysis, and Kidney Transplantation.

- To advise the Ministry of Health on the development and advancement of Nephrology services under the ministry.

Objective
- To provide efficient and high-quality services while also considering cost-effectiveness. The services provided at all times will be guided by humanistic values and based on high medical ethics.
- To continue as the national referral centre for patients with kidney disease.
- To serve as a training centre for all levels of staff in all aspects of Nephrology, Dialysis, and Kidney Transplantation.
- To be a centre for clinical research in the field of kidney diseases with the aim of improving the quality of services.
- To advise the Ministry of Health Malaysia on the development and advancement of Nephrology services under the Ministry.
- To play a role in patient advocacy, particularly in improving the level of treatment for patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease.
