Introduction & Background

Our department provide two main services, consist of in patient and out patient. For in patient, it covered the provision of normal and therapeutic diet and clinical dietetics care to the patients. For outpatient, our service includes nutrition counseling for both individual and group.

Our kitchen is located in the main block of the hospital. We provide diet to all the wards in HKL, including IPR.

Be a center of excellence in the provision of clinical dietetic service, hospital food service and activities to increase the quality of customer-centric services professionally.

Mission

1. Provide accurate, efficient and the high quality dietetic and food services using the current technological advancement

2. Provide clinical dietetic attachment training

  1.1. Provide medical nutrition therapy services by applying the nutrition care process   

        1.2. Advocate health promotion to improve the nutrition status of patients

2. Food Services

Serve the right food to the right patients in order to improve their nutrition status     according to their needs and complements their overall medical treatment as well as maintaining customer satisfaction

Client's Charter

Dietetic

1. In- patient referred by doctors being seen for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) within 24 hours working day

Food Service

1. Diet for patients will be served based on order from ward based on hospital diet menu

2. Diet for patients will be served based on regulation and entitlement set by MOH

3. Diet for qualified hospital's staff will be served based on criteria set by MOH

A. Clinical Dietetic Service

Clinical dietetics services provided for in- and out-patients based on doctor's referral.

A dietitian works as part of HKL multidisciplinary team to provide and evidence-based nutritional care to inpatients in accordance with hospital policies. Dietitians provide dietetic counselling and nutritional intervention to prevent risk of diet related diseases and promote health through healthy eating habits as part of medical treatment.

For inpatient, it covered the provision of :

• Diet consultation service (based on medical diagnosis or current medical issue)
• Enteral Nutrition Support
• Nutrition education for both individual and group

The dietetic service offers expert nutritional advice on the following specialties:

• Children with special needs
• Inborn error metabolism

• Critical Care (Adult, pediatric and neonate)

• Gynaecological disorders (PCOS)

Dietitians also involved in community services, conduct talks, workshops and seminars to meet the requirements of different individuals or companies.

Our dietetic clinical services are usually provided to patients who are referred by medical doctor. To make a direct appointment, you will require a referral letter from either a GP or Polyclinic doctor.

B.  Food Service

Catering service mainly serve for in-patients only. Our department serves a large number of normal diet and therapeutic to in-patient. Food will be served base on ward diet order, regulation and patient's entitlement. Food also provide for all new admission if diet order received before 6.15 p.m. Diet for Doctor On-Call also provided base on their entitlement. We also supply and pack enteral formula for those patients who need, as an oral supplement or for tube feeding.

Continuing Dietetics Update (CDE)

The department has a regular CDE program twice a month. Presentations are done by internal dietitians or invited dietitians/ medical officers. Topics presented includes clinical dietetics findings and updates, quality improvement activities and literature review critiques.

Clinical Attachment

The department provides clinical attachment to the following groups:

1. Undergraduate dietetics student

2. Clinical Instructor for dietetics students

3. Clinical dietitians who are currently working at other institutions
