i. INTRODUCTION

In the early five, the organ-based expertise included nephrology began to evolve in Europe. It took more than a decade before the development came to the country until in 1962 after returning one of the local surgeons from training abroad and developed the field of urology as a field of expertise, while the hemodialysis machine began in 1964 at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital afterwards.

The hemodialysis machine is used to treat acute renal failure where a total of 85 dialysis treatments have been made until 1968. The Peritoneal method was introduced at the end of year 1966 and is also used for acute treatment for kidney failure at that time.

The hemodialysis Unit started temporarily in Ward 4 in 1969 before moving to the Institute of Urology and Nephrology (IUN) in 1970 until its move to the specialist complex and daily Nursing (SCACC) at level 3 of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) at the end of 2012.

In its management, hemodialysis unit and kidney Replacement Therapy Programme is under the Department of Urology, until the year 1975, the nephrology took over the dialysis unit and organised a treatment schedule as well as other aspects of the hemodialysis programme. In 1976, the nephrology unit was upgraded to the full department and this marked the beginning of an integrated programme and development of renal replacement therapy in the country.

Currently the department of Nephrology HKL is led by Dr. Sunita Bavanandan as head of Department of Nephrology together with 294 other members of 7 consultants, 11 clinical professionals, 24 medical officers, 41 assistant medical officers, 153 nurses, 49 assistant health Care assistants and 9 office staff.
