The Department of Anaesthesia And Intensive is one of the largest departments in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. We provide perioperative and intensive care services for a large number of patients mainly from Klang Valley and also throughout the country, functioning as a national referral centre.
Our General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) has 30 beds and we are also responsible in taking care of ventilated patients outside of GICU. As part of the national referral centre for healthcare as well as a training centre, we are constantly involved in planning and upgrading policies related to standards of care, training and issues pertaining to anesthesia and intensive care for all the hospitals under the Ministry of Health.

MISSION

Our mission is to provide the highest standard of anaesthesia, intensive care, pain management and related services for the community and to successfully integrate this with all the other clinical disciplines of the hospital, in a manner that is holistic, humanitarian and patient-centered with an emphasis on human dignity.

OBJECTIVES

1. To provide comprehensive perioperative anaesthesia service and integrate this with other clinical service in the hospital.

2. To promote patient centred care through the establishment of anaesthesia clinic and day of surgery admission.

3. To provide effective and safe pain relief for all patients undergoing surgery.

4. To continue to improve the outcome and survival of patients who are treated in the intensive care unit.

5. To become centre of excellence for subspecialty training in anaesthesia in particular intensive care, pain, regional anaesthesia and neuroanaesthesia.

6. To provide quality training for post graduate training in anaesthesia for both local and overseas training programmes.

7. To assist local universities in the training of medical students in anaesthesia.

8. To be the leading training centre in the post basic intensive care nursing.

9. To establish formal training programme for anaesthetic nurses in peri operative care and for medical student in hemodynamic monitoring and respiratory care.

10. To be the coordinating centre for the National Sudit for Adult Intensive Crea Units (NAICU).

11. To conduct clinical trials as well as to collaborate in research activities both local and international.

CLIENT’S CHARTER

1. All patients who require anaesthesia service shall be attended to within an acceptable time frame.

2. All patients for anaesthesia shall be seen by the anaesthetist preoperatively and given appropriate consultation and advice. They will receive safe anaethesia, adequate pain relief and other postoperative care such as intensive care if required.

3. Critically ill pateints who fulfill admission criteria shall receive intensive care management in the General ICU.

4. Family members will be informed of the progress of the patient regularly.

ORGANIZATIONAL CHART

 

 

The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care provides a wide range of anesthetic services to facilitate procedures for the multi-disciplinary units in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. The scope of anaesthetic services provided by our department include the following:

1. OPERATION THEATRE SERVICE

1.1 Anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery for general surgical and subspeciality surgical services.

1.2. Anaesthesia for various procedures outside operation theatre such as MRI, CT scan, interventional and diagnostic radiology, radiotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, dermatological laser treatment, endoscopy and other procedures in out of OT environment.

1.3. Anaesthesia for daycare surgery and day of admission surgery

2. ANAESTHESIA CLINIC

2.1. Anaesthesia Clinic for pre-operative evaluation for patients undergoing surgery and various procedures.

2.2. Anaesthesia Allergy Clinic for screening and diagnosing patients with possible allergy to anaesthesia drugs.

2.3. Pain Clinic for managing and treating patients with chronic pain. We also provide interventional procedure for pain management.

3. ACUTE PAIN SERVICE

The service is operational 24 hours daily by anaesthesia specialist and medical officer on daily rotation. Ward rounds are carried out twice a day by the APS team.

3.1. Acute Pain Service to provide pain relief for postoperative cases.

3.2 Pain service for as non-surgical cases such as post trauma, which is referred to us.

3.2 Pain service for cancer pain, which has not yet been referred to oncology or palliative unit

4. INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

The Kuala Lumpur Hospital General Intensive Care Unit is a Level 3 ICU with facilities for 30 beds. Located on the third floor of the main block of the hospital where it was formerly known as Ward 10. Our Intensive Care Unit receives more than 1000 admissions a year with an average length of stay of 5 days.

4.1. Managing critically ill patients in General ICU (GICU)

4.2. Co-managing critically ill patients in peripheral ICU such as Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), Cardiac Rehabilitation Ward (CRW), Neurosurgical ICU (NICU), Urology & Nephrology ICU (UNICU) and Medical High Dependency ward (MHDW)

4.3. Co-managing ventilated patients in ward, including patients awaiting transfer to GICU and patients with guarded prognosis.

5. SUPPORT SERVICE

Support service ensures availability and maintenance of essential equipment such as ventilators and medical gas for the whole hospital.

The anaesthetic clinic is located in the 7th floor of the SCACC building. Consultation is provided by a consultant anaesthesiologist as well as anaesthesiology medical officers.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in Hospital Kuala Lumpur is dedicated to provide comprehensive training and education for a future of excellence in anaesthesia services in the country.

ANAESTHESIA TRAINING:

1. Anaesthesia post-graduate training for postgraduate students in local universities

2. Anaesthesia post-graduate training for postgraduate students in oversea university. HKL is an accredited training centre for the Membership of The College of Anaesthetists of Ireland (MCAI)

3. Subspecialty training centre for Intensive Care, Neuroanaesthesia, Vascular Anaesthesia, Pain and Regional Anaesthesia for both anaesthesia post graduate as well as post graduate from other discipline.

4. Anaesthesia training for service medical officers.

5. Basic anaesthesia training for house officers doing anaesthesia and ICU posting.

6. Basic anaesthesia module for medical students.

7. Post-basic nurses training in anaesthesia, intensive care, coronary care, operating room techniques.
