NEUROPHYSIOLOGY UNIT
Question 1
What are neurodiagnostic services available in the neurophysiology unit?
Answer 1
1 | Electroencephalography (EEG) | EEG is a non-invasive and painless procedure highly sensitive monitoring equipment records the activity through electrodes that are placed at measured intervals on a patient’s scalp. The test is not painful. The test itself usually takes about 90 minutes. Patients are usually awake during the test, but sometimes, sleep-deprived or induced sleep EEGs may be performed to capture specific brain activity patterns. The results of an EEG can provide valuable information for diagnosing and managing a wide range of neurological conditions, helping doctors make informed decisions about treatment and care. |
2 | Video Telemetry Recording (VTR) | Video Telemetry Recording is a special type of EEG (brainwave) investigation. The brainwaves are recorded usually for several days along with a video using a camera as an inpatient. Therefore, this is a much longer recording than a standard EEG. It allows healthcare providers to capture detailed information about a patient's seizures and behavior, leading to more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment plans. Additionally, it can be used to assess the impact of epilepsy on a patient's daily life and overall quality of life. |
3 | Polysomnography (PSG) | Polysomnography (PSG) is a comprehensive sleep study that monitors and records various physiological parameters while an individual sleeps. This test is performed to diagnose and evaluate sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome, among others. The PSG test provides a detailed and comprehensive evaluation of a person's sleep patterns and associated physiological changes. It helps doctors diagnose sleep disorders accurately and design appropriate treatment plans. |
4 | Evoked Potentials (EP) | Evoked Potentials (EP) tests are a group of diagnostic studies that assess the electrical activity in the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. These tests are used to evaluate the functioning of sensory pathways, such as those responsible for vision, hearing, and somatosensation (sensation from the body's skin, muscles, and joints). EP tests are valuable tools for diagnosing and monitoring conditions that affect the nervous system, including multiple sclerosis (MS), optic neuritis, and various neuropathies. |
6 | Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) | Nerve Conduction Studies [NCS] evaluate electrical potentials from peripheral nerves. Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) tests are diagnostic procedures used to assess the function and health of peripheral nerves in the body. These tests measure the speed and strength of electrical signals as they travel along specific nerves, helping healthcare providers diagnose and evaluate a wide range of nerve-related conditions, such as neuropathy, nerve compression, and nerve injuries. NCS results are interpreted by a doctor. These tests are an important tool in the evaluation of nerve disorders and can help doctors develop appropriate management plans for their patients. |
7 | Electromyography (EMG) | Electromyography (EMG) is an electrodiagnostic test that uses EMG needles to study nerve and muscle function. It is commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions related to the neuromuscular system, such as muscle disorders, nerve disorders, and conditions that affect the transmission of signals between nerves and muscles. |
8 | Transcranial Doppler (TCD) | A Transcranial Doppler (TCD) test is a medical diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound technology to measure blood flow velocity in the major arteries and blood vessels within the brain. It is a non-invasive and painless test that provides valuable information about blood circulation in the brain, helping doctors diagnose and monitor various neurological and vascular conditions. |
