Introduction
The Ophthalmology Department has come to its existence as a humble eye clinic in the year of 1946 at Hospital Tanglin. It was then moved to Hospital Kuala Lumpur in the 1950’s where ophthalmology department was established. It has been providing specialized ophthalmology care and services to the public nation ever since. It is now the main referral center for all eye diseases nationwide. Comprehensive tertiary care and treatments are the main objectives of the department, on top of providing research activities, teaching programmes and outreach clinic services.
There are 7 subspecialty teams which provide their care and treatment in the department, which are:
1. Cornea
2. Glaucoma
3. Oculoplasty
4. Medical Retina
5. Vitreoretina
6. Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
7. Neuro-ophthalmology
There are also optometry services provided, including:
1. Refraction
2. Contact lenses
3. Low vision aid
4. Binocular vision assessment
5. Pediatric optometry including orthoptic assessments
6. Visual rehabilitation
7. Diabetic retinopathy screening
Vision
Our vision is to be the centre of excellence in providing high quality eye care to the public and also create the awareness of healthy eye-care practices in sustaining good eyesight, aligned with the policies of the Ministry of Health (MOH).
We are committed to provide excellent eye-care services through competent, courteous and committed professionals using the latest technologies.

Organisation Chart
Services
General Ophthalmology Clinic
Service provided by consultant ophthalmologists, specialists, medical officers, optometrist and other medical personnel. They provide a wide range of services catering to all eye diseases.
Glaucoma Clinic
Deals with glaucoma eye disease which is an abnormally high eye pressure causing progressive optic nerve damage which compromises vision. The team provides comprehensive glaucoma care to patients with all types of adult glaucoma.
Cornea Clinic
Deals with ocular surface problems and corneal diseases such as corneal abrasion, corneal ulcer, dystrophy and allergic diseases. Corneal transplant surgery is one of its main focus.
Oculoplasty Clinic
Concentrates mainly on the abnormalities, growth and tumour of the eyelids, orbit, and the lacrimal system. Provides its care mainly through therapeutic and reconstructive surgeries.
Vitreoretinal Clinic
Deals with diseases of the retina or any structures involving the posterior segment of the eye. It mainly provides surgical care in treating the retinal diseases, common diseases are retinal detachment and advanced diabetic eye diseases.
Medical Retina Clinic
Treats conditions involving the retina and uveal layer, mainly by medical treatment. Common conditions include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal blood vessel obstruction and inflammation of the uveal tissue.
Paediatric Ophthalmology Clinic
Focuses on paediatric eye diseases, children’s visual development and strabismus. Common diseases include congenital cataract, congenital glaucoma, retinoblastoma, lazy eye conditions and squints.
Neuro Ophthalmology Clinic
Deals with neurological disorders affecting the eye, optic nerve and other related structures.
Optometry Clinic
Assesses and manages patients who need optical correction. Their services include refraction, contact lens, low vision aids, orthoptic, visual field assessment and other advanced diagnostic tests.

Client Charter
1. 85 % of patient shall be seen by healthcare worker within 90 minutes of waiting time.
Waiting time: Time taken for a patient after registration, to the first healthcare worker that examine the patient. It can be either an optometrist, paramedic or doctors.
2. Each patient will be given consultancy with expertise and specialization.
3. All patient will be treated professionally with compassion, respect and courtesy.
4. Patient will be counselled for appropriate and safe treatment which includes procedures, medications and rehabilitations.
