Hospital Organ Procurement Unit

Introduction

The Hospital Organ Procurement Unit (UPOH), Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) was established in January 2020 by YBhg. Datuk Dr. Heric Corray, Director of Kuala Lumpur Hospital at that time. The establishment of UPOH HKL to replace the Tissue and Organ Procurement (TOP) Team in accordance with the instructions through the circular of the Director General of Health Malaysia dated 19 June 2019 which aims to inform the measures to strengthen the governance of the Cadaveric Organ and Tissue Procurement Service (after death) in the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) ).

The main function of this unit is to detect potential cases as donors as well as ensure the smoothness of the referral process and procurement of organs and tissues at HKL and also improve the rate of organ and tissue donation at the hospital level.

UPOH together with the help of the National Transplant Resource Center (PSTN) team needs to implement regular and periodic training programs to ensure that every member involved in the organ donation process has efficient knowledge and skills so that the procurement of donated organs can run smoothly.

Malaysia will become a country that consists of individuals and communities that care and accept the concept of organ and tissue donation in accordance with the government's desire to create a caring society. Further increase in the organ donation rate at Hospital Kuala Lumpur will help ensure that every Malaysian citizen who needs an organ transplant will have the opportunity to receive an organ and live a better quality of life.

2. Increase the rate of organ and cadaveric tissue donation in  the hospital

3. Increase awareness amongst HKL citizens about the importance of organ and cadaveric tissue donation using current medical practices.

OBJECTIVE

i. Detect potential organ donors and ensure the smoothness of the referral process as well as the procurement of organs and cadaveric tissue

ii. Increasing the procurement and donation rate of organs and cadaveric tissue in the hospital

iii. As a reference point and store organ and cadaveric tissue donor data in the hospital

iv. Organizing training and promotion related to organ donation to HKL staff

Services

WORK SCOPE

1. Clinical

  • Conduct clinical rounds every day to actively identify potential cases in selected departments
  • Receive potential case referrals including outside office hours, weekends and public holidays
  • On duty on call according to the set schedule
  • Managing tests to assess donor suitability and organ function
  • Ensure brain death tests are carried out on cases of suspected brain death
  • Managing together with the primary team to maintain the stability and function of the organ donor until the procurement procedure is completed
  • Give counseling to all relatives of patients who died and were judged suitable for organ donation
  • Coordinating the procurement process of organs and tissues with PSTN
  • Conducting death audits (brain and cardiac)

2. Training and Promotion

  • Working with PSTN to coordinate and organize training related to organ donation for hospital staff
  • Giving Continuous Medical Education (CME) and Continuous Nursing Education (CNE) talks about the organ procurement process at Kuala Lumpur Hospital
  • Attending courses related to organ donation to increase knowledge in the field of organ and tissue donation
