Introduction
The Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health Hospital Kuala Lumpur coordinates important psychiatry and mental health service programmes in Malaysia. We provide psychiatry treatment and mental health promotion to clients in the Klang Valley area, also serving as the national psychiatric referral centre.
Vision
To produce a balanced and healthy citizen from the psychological perspectives by giving emphasis on the mental health promotion, psychosocial problem prevention and to prioritize the customer rights.
Mission
To provide professional mental health, psychiatric and rehabilitation services to patients, in keeping with their basic human rights in mind.

1. Outpatient Services
Treatment for common issues including stress, depression, anxiety, obsessions and compulsions, and trauma. Treatment is also offered for conditions such as psychosis (e.g., hearing invisible voices, a change in pattern of speech, thinking or behaviour), and bipolar illness (unstable emotions, extreme fluctuation between sadness and anger or elated mood). Assessment for Borang Pendaftaran Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU) is also available for patients who have registered to our department.
2. Inpatient Services
Short and temporary admission to the ward for treatment of acute mood disorders, changes in thinking and behavioural patterns which might bring danger to themselves or others. The need for ward admission is determined by the doctor, guided by the Mental Health Act 2001 and Mental Health Regulations 2010.
3. Community Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Services
Psychiatry treatment services at home and community-based psychosocial rehabilitation are available only for patients registered with the psychiatry clinic.
4. Addiction Psychiatry Services
More commonly known as the Psychiatry Addiction Unit (PAdU). The unit provides assessment and treatment for both substance use and behavioural addiction. These includes issues related to alcohol, illicit and prescription drugs use. Some the behavioural addictions encountered in the service include internet, sex, pornography dan compulsive gambling. Addiction Psychiatry also leads the Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) Programme, and also the drug detection and certification service.
5. Geriatric Psychiatry Services
Specialized psychiatry services for older persons. These services include mental health and capacity assessment with holistic and multidisciplinary management of psychosocial issues, late life mood disorders, psychosis, and dementia with emphasis on the non-pharmacological approach of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
6. Neuropsychiatry Services
Treatment for neuropsychiatry issues in neurological issues such as epilepsy, head injury, younger-onset dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis et cetera.
7. Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Services
Consultation and liaison services on psychiatry issues related to other medical conditions, such as maternal health (obstetrics and gynaecology), surgical issues, kidney-related issues (nephrology), and organ donation services.
8. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services (at Tunku Azizah Hospital)
Treatment for health issues in children and adolescents such as learning difficulties, ADHD (issues with focus during learning and hyperactivity), autism (issues in communication, social interactions, narrow and repetitive interests/behaviours), and mood and behavioural issues.
9. Clinical Psychology Services
Provides clinical psychological diagnostic assessment and psychotherapy services to manage mental and behavioral disorders. Clinical psychological diagnostic assessment involves the administration of psychological tests for the purposes of diagnosis and psychotherapy. The psychotherapy intervention approach carried out by Clinical Psychology Officers is based on evidence-based practice and the scientific practice model (scientist-practitioner model). In addition, the Clinical Psychology Service also emphasizes the prevention of mental health problems faced by the community.
10. Occupational Therapy Services
Mental, physical, and psychosocial rehabilitation treatments to enable patients to reach optimal functioning by providing therapeutic activities as a treatment medium.
