Introduction
The Infection Control Unit, Hospital Kuala Lumpur has been established on 1985. This unit initially operated in the Microbiology Unit of the Department of Pathology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur and started with only one Infection Control nurse who was in charge of monitoring Infection Control activities in the hospital. This unit was created to carry out activities/programs related to infection prevention and control to prevent the occurrence of serious epidemic cases. This program is also focused on staff safety and patients from getting Healthcare Acquired Infection (HCAI) while in hospital.
The Infection Control Unit also carries out various activities such as:
- Conducting surveillance at the hospital and national level
- Assist in the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program
- Monitor the air quality in the operating room according to the schedule which has been set periodically (air sampling / air particulate count).
- Conduct environmental audits in all wards every 4 months.
- Giving talks related to infection control to hospital workers from various categories.

1. Ensure that all hospital staff comply with infection control and antibiotic policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations.
2. Maintain and improve infection control and antibiotic activities.
3. Ensure a hospital environment that is safe from disease infection.
Objective
1. GENERAL
Preventing and controlling Healthcare Associated Infections at Hospital Kuala Lumpur
2. SPECIFIC
I. Increase the awareness and knowledge of Kuala Lumpur Hospitals’ employees related to infection control through continuous learning.
II. Protecting Kuala Lumpur Hospital employees from any Healthcare Associated Infections and injuries while on duty.
III. Ensure that patients are discharged after receiving primary treatment without contracting a Healthcare Associated Infection

Services
1. Ensure compliance with the Infection Control Policy is practiced by all categories of health workers.
2. Provide advice to health workers, patients and visitors about preventive measures and control of infectious diseases in the ward/department.
3. Conducting surveillance at the hospital and national level. Among the surveillances carried out are as follows:
a. Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) once a year (October)
b. Period Prevalence Study on Bloodstream Infection (BSI) once a year (April)
c. Healthcare Associated — MultiDrug Resistant Organism (HA-MDRO) Lab Based Surveillance-continuous surveillance of Alert Organisms:
i. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
ii. Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) producing Klebsiella Pneumonias
iii. Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) producing Escheria coli
iv. Acinetobacter Baumanni
v. Vancomycin Resistance Enterobacter (VRE)
vi. Carbapenem Resistant Enterobactericeae (CRE)
d. Hand Hygiene Compliance Surveillance
- carried out continuously every month (750 opportunities) and data sent to KKM 4 times a year (in March, June, September, December)
e. Central Venous Catheter (CVC) Care Bundle Compliance Audit - once a year (in October)
f. KKM Infection Prevention and Control Audit - once a year (in April)
g. Environmental Audit
- 3 times a year (every 4 months in April, June, and September)
4. Assist in the implementation of the Antimicrobial Stewardship program in Departments at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
5. Monitor the air quality in the operating theatre according to the schedule that has been set periodically (air sampling / air particulate count)
6. Giving talks related to infection control to hospital workers from various categories.
Client Charter
Ensure hospital staffs are given awareness and understanding of Standard Precaution and Transmission Based Precaution to prevent and control the transmission of infection to patients, visitors and hospital health personnel.
