Emergency & Trauma

Introduction

The Emergency and Trauma Department (ETD) has been the frontline of Hospital Kuala Lumpur since being upgraded from the Emergency Unit in 1993. Providing holistic and comprehensive emergency care services has been the responsibility of this department. ETD HKL is also one of the major emergency departments in this region.

Emergency and Trauma Department HKL is actively involved in emergency preparedness and disaster management at the national level. A few of the major disaster management the department has coordinated were the Highland Tower Tragedy in 1993, severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS) management in 2003, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic in 2020/2021

Several collaborations among the stakeholders of this hospital have enabled ETD to engage in strategic services that further enhance patient care and addressing patient needs. Acute emergency dialysis service, acute stroke thrombolysis, One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC), HKL-IJN ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction Network   (HISNET)      for Primary Percutaneous     Coronary Intervention (PCI) and Emergency Critical Care are among the list of services provided. 

ETD HKL has more than 60 cubicles and manage an average of 250,000 patients yearly, making ETD HKL one of the country's busiest emergency departments. Besides providing 24-hour emergency services to cater the community of Kuala Lumpur, the department also accepts referrals from all over the country.

To become the center of excellence for services and training in Emergency Medicine in this region in keeping with current medical advancements. 

Mission

  1. To provide effective and efficient emergency medical services.
  2. To offer comprehensive emergency services for all ages in the aspect of prevention, diagnostic investigations, timely therapeutic intervention, and definitive treatment.
  3. To collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in providing quality service.
  4. To instill hope in patients recovering from their illnesses.

Objective

  1. To give fast and effective emergency treatment with the latest infrastructure equipment and technology.
  2. To prepare highly skilled teams to provide medical coverage for Y.M.M. Yang Dipertuan Agong, Malaysian Prime Minister, and National Leaders during national events.
  3. To prepare elite medical teams to engage in disaster with the assistance of the latest technology.
  4. To provide a One-Stop Crisis Centre to facilitate and provide assistance for victims of domestic violence in keeping with the government's aspiration.
  5. To provide Emergency Call Centre services to receive and coordinate information in any emergency situation.
  6. To provide pre-hospital services and emergency ambulance for emergency cases outside of the hospital and to bring the patients to the appropriate hospital for further care.

Client Charter

1. To give optimal emergency care services.

2. Cases will be treated according to the severity of the patient.

  • Critical Case (*MTS Level 1/2) = immediately
  • Semi-Critical (MTS Level 1/2/3) ≤ 30 minutes
  • Non-critical (MTS Level 4/5) ~ 120 minutes

* Malaysian Triage Scale (MTS) 2022

3. Cases will be referred and co-managed with the relevant specialties for further management.
